Postcards of Different Size Attract Attention
When deciding what angle to take with your next postcard project, start by thinking about what the size will be. The reason that this is important is because so many people send out postcards that look the same as all the other mail they get. And when your target audience is constantly hammered with junk mail every given day, it is important that your postcard is noticed. Cresting a postcard that is bigger than what you traditionally see is the first step to getting their attention.
How big do you need to make it? Considering most people send out 4†x 6†or 5 “ x 7†sized postcards, you should aim to make your bigger than this. Consider a 5 ½†x 8 1/2†or my favorite is the 11†x 6â€. At this size, you are going to stand out from the crowd. Instead of throwing the postcard straight into the trash, your audience may spend the extra 3 second actually read your message.
By opting to create a larger postcard, then your printing as well as printing costs will increase. But if your target audience is throwing away what you are sending them because your piece is not attracting any attention, then wouldn’t you rather pay more to get a better return on your mailing? Otherwise you might as light your money on fire. Besides, unless you are sending out tens of thousand of postcards, your increased costs will not be substantial.
