You've heard it said a thousand times before in every economics and business course you've ever taken. It's written in every book on the basics of small business that you have ever read. So what's up with these offers for free business card design and printing? What's the catch?

It depends on the business card design and printing company. Some exchange a batch of free business cards for the opportunity to advertise their business on the back of each of your cards. This makes sense, right? Every card that you give away is a referral for their business.

Another business card design and printing company offering free business cards may offer a batch of free cards when you purchase 'X' amount of other cards. Or perhaps the shipping and handling fees on these cards is more than enough to cover the mailing costs, which still gives them a profit. These aren't necessarily bad things, at all. Your original batch is still free and, in the end, you may end up saving money.

However, free business card design and printing most likely will not include the heaviest weight, most detailed textures, or more than one color. It may not even include graphics or logos or more than the bare minimum lines of text. Free does not mean fancy when it comes to free business card design and printing, but it can be functional when you're on a budget and itching to get started networking and promoting your business.
